Internet and World Wide Web
Data centers can consume a considerable amount of energy used in the world. And data centers continue to grow in order to serve emerging web services, such as Voice over IP, and file- and video-sharing Web sites.
Analyst firm IDC identifies 2010 as the year the cost of power could overtake the investment in servers¹ .
According to Gartner the cost of energy is quickly becoming a major part of the IT budget. “Today, energy costs typically form less than 10 percent of an overall IT budget. However, this could rise to more than 50 percent in the next few years”, says Rakesh Kumar, research vice president at Gartner².
Tivoli Provisioning Manager (TPM) can play an important role in helping IT organizations manage power consumption. The automated provisioning capability built in to Tivoli Provisioning Manager can be used to place servers in standby mode when they are not needed. Servers can automatically be restored to active mode when they are needed again.
As IT systems are often designed with excess capacity to handle peak loads, servers are often underutilized. TPM in conjunction with Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator (TIO) can dynamically consolidate workload onto a smaller number of servers while placing the unused servers in standby mode. Such workload consolidation is enabled by virtualization technologies and can be triggered based on a schedule or by tracking the actual usage/workload of servers. Again as the workload increases, additional servers can be restored to active mode and workload can be rebalanced across a larger number of servers to ensure required response times.

How many extra pages do you really need when you print that page from a website? And how many sheets of paper do you generally recycle after replicating that page? We all agree that it's much better for the environment if you can avoid inking up those unwanted extras in the first place. The free GreenPrint World and pro-level GreenPrint Home Premium can help.
GreenPrint World
GreenPrint World is a free version of GreenPrint software for home users worldwide. GreenPrint solves a problem nearly every computer user has experienced: The wasteful pages that you didn't intend to print that immediately go in the recycling bin (for example, pages with just a URL, banner ad, legal jargon, or other content you don't need). GreenPrint does this by analyzing the document and then highlighting and removing unnecessary pages. It also makes it easy for the user to then remove any additional unwanted pages. GreenPrint incorporates an easy to use PDF writer to provide an alternative to printing, image removal functionality, and a reporting feature, which keeps track of the number of pages, trees, and money saved.
GreenPrint Home Premium
GreenPrint solves a problem nearly every computer user has experienced- the wasteful pages that seem only to appear after a document has been printed (for example, pages with just a URL, banner ad, legal jargon, or a run-over Excel column). GreenPrint does this by analyzing the document and then highlighting and removing unnecessary pages. GreenPrint also incorporates an easy to use PDF writer, a print preview called GreenView, and a reporting feature, which keeps track of the number of pages, trees, and money saved.
If you've got Google Desktop, Google's energy-saving gadget will monitor your power savings from your Google Desktop dashboard. You'll have to make some concessions, of course, like letting your computer hibernate or shut down after shorter intervals of idleness, but seeing that you spared enough energy to power a JumboTron at a baseball game may cause you to rethink just how valuable 24/7 access to the computer is to you.
Energy Saver (Google Gadget)
This gadget enables and optimizes your computer's power management settings to help save on energy. We're committed to helping to build a clean energy future. As our business grows, we want to make sure we minimize our impact on the Earth's climate. So we're taking every step we can to implement innovative and responsible environmental practices across our company to reduce our carbon footprint, ensure efficient computing and help our employees be green.
Operating System and Utility Program Vista users wishing to shrink their energy footprints a size can get started with Vista Battery Saver, a freeware app that disables certain Vista features, particularly when your power reserves dip below a predefined threshold. This app is especially useful for owners of Vista laptops who are running on limited batteries.
A perpetually running computer is an energy-dumping computer. Luckily, even if you're too lazy to shut your computer down yourself, freeware like Auto Shutdown can schedule shut downs for you. Not only that, this app gives you five modes for taking your rig offline, and lets you program hot-key combinations to launch the sleep or "off" mode of your choice without opening the program's interface.
